Water wells in Newcastle, OK
Newcastle sits in McClain County just south of the Canadian River from OKC. City water serves much of town, but larger lots and land outside city limits often depend on private wells.
McClain County well data
OWRB-based records show 2,275 wells in McClain County with a median depth of 140 feet, most between 100 and 160 feet. The modeled cost of a complete system is $9,600 to $16,000, and drilling and casing alone is $4,000 to $10,400 (OWRB-based cost index).
Different geology from OKC
McClain County is not among the six counties OWRB lists over the Garber-Wellington basin (OWRB Garber-Wellington basin order), so yields and water quality depend more on the local formation. Ask a driller which completion reports nearby show good water, and at what depth.
Near the river
Where flooding is known, casing must extend 24 inches above natural ground (OAC 785:35-7-1). Low ground by the river is also where surface water is most likely to reach a poorly sealed well, so retest after any flood (OSU Extension: Well Water Basics).
Newcastle tips
- Ask the City whether a water main is close enough to connect before drilling.
- Keep the well at least 50 feet uphill, or 100 feet downhill, from the septic tank (OAC 785:35-7-1).
Pump and tank sizing
A family of four on a Newcastle acreage with a garden uses far more water in July than in January. Ask drillers to explain the expected yield from the test and how the pump size matches it. A test pumping result, the water level found and the yield in gallons per minute all go on the OWRB completion report form, so ask for those numbers in writing.
