Key facts
- The Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB) licenses well drillers and pump installers and sets construction standards (OWRB Wells & Licensing).
- A household well usually needs no OWRB permit; an intent-to-drill authorization is required for uses such as public supply, irrigation of more than 3 acres and other commercial use (OWRB Wells & Licensing).
- New wells must sit at least 50 feet from a septic tank or similar pollution source if the well is uphill, 75 feet if level and 100 feet if downhill (OAC 785:35-7-1).
- OSU Extension advises testing a private well every year for nitrates, total dissolved solids, pH and E. coli (OSU Extension: Well Water Basics).
